Alejanadro Aravena, curator of the 2016 International Architecture Biennale:<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cREPORTING FROM THE FRONT will be about sharing with a broader audience, the work of people who are scrutinizing the horizon looking for new fields of action, facing issues like\u00a0segregation<\/b>,\u00a0inequalities<\/b>,\u00a0peripheries<\/b>,\u00a0access to sanitation<\/b>,\u00a0natural disasters<\/b>,\u00a0housing shortage<\/b>,\u00a0migration<\/b>,\u00a0informality<\/b>,\u00a0crime<\/b>,\u00a0traffic<\/b>,\u00a0waste<\/b>,\u00a0pollution<\/b>\u00a0and the\u00a0participation of communities<\/b>. And simultaneously it will be about presenting examples where different dimensions are synthesized, integrating the pragmatic with the existential, pertinence and boldness, creativity and common sense. \u201c<\/em><\/div>\n
\u201cIt is not easy \u2013 concluded\u00a0Aravena<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 to achieve such a level of expansion and synthesis; they are battles that need to be fought. The always menacing scarcity of means, the ruthless constraints, the lack of time and urgencies of all kinds are a constant threat that explain why we so often fall short in delivering quality. The forces that shape the built environment are not necessarily amicable either: the greed and impatience of capital or the single mindedness and conservatism of the bureaucracy tend to produce banal, mediocre and dull built environments. These are the frontlines from which we would like different practitioners to report, sharing success stories and exemplary cases where architecture did, is and will make a difference.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n

On the very positive side, I found it a down-to-earth, practical, inspiring and informative biennale, with plenty of ideas and materials to explore further… On the less positive side, this was somehow a compiling of tips for the communities to substitute themselves to governments in addressing the lack of founding of social housing.\u00a0<\/div>\n

Beyond Bending. Ochsendorf, Block and Dejong<\/strong> show that having structures working in compression, like this extraordinary un-reinforced stone vault, saves material and energy, up to 70%, becoming then less costly economically and ecologically (less material = less weight = less energy needed to build)… This is not anecdotic, changing the reinforced concrete paradigm could very well be the solution to the eventual lack of ressources and global warming.\u00a0<\/p>\n
