Le Mucem

Mucem, the little name for  « Musee des civilisations de l’Europe et de la Mediteranee » is planned to open it’s doors in June of this year. I have been eagerly following it’s construction but a diabolic bugg erased most of them, so here are what I have left…

On the opening week-end of Marseille Provence 2013, Rudy Ricciotti’s Mucem opened it’s doors for a preview. Thousands of Marseille’s inhabitant braved the cold rainy day (which is quite a performance for locals, as here rains means empty streets) to admire the intriguing building and created an uninterrupted garland of umbrellas across the bridge linking it to the fort St Jean also opened to preview. We were all very much rewarded for our bravery, as the Mucem keeps all of his promises: it is imposing yet light, cosy yet opened to the sea and harbour, and I think it has definitely been adopted by Marseille’s people….. I am impatient to see it’s completion, and do hope that the scenography of the exhibition will respect the spirit of openness that characterises it.
