A pier belonging to the harbour of Marseille, for MP2013 European capital of culture, the J1 is being lend to the city of Marseille and hosts events and exhibitions.
Its metallic industrial-looking structure, harbours different pop-ups (a cafe, a shop/library, a photo studio and a concert/theatre scene) and galleries, all enjoying the incredible views over Marseille on one side and of the sea on the opposite side
The bench/light installation at the J1’s entrance, surprisingly comfy those benches..!
The pop ups:
Several Galleries, grouped under the name: « Atelier du Large » (translated in english on the MP2013 website as « Seafront Factory ») are spread along the open structure and are free of charge, they explore the Marseille way of living in an intimist way and have a very active and dense agenda that you can view here
« Mediterraneans, from yesterday’s cities to today’s men » is a multimedia fiction with a mix of antique objects, drawings, photography and videos commissioned for the opening of MP2013, linking Marseille to the the many great cities of the Mediterranean, their history and their present through the eye of common people,
a great scenography with black painted containers and regular opening onto the neighbouring departing ferries and the sea, don’t miss it!
And finally, the views from both sides of the J1:
Towards the town:
Towards the harbour:
On the sidewalk in front of the J1, an installation including a real but oversized savon de Marseille bloc….
…and 2 month later, it’s still there, slightly worn out:
Unfortunately the J1 closes from late May to October for a lack of funding…. but we still had a bit of an extra on June 13th with the Off’s festival party..
